In recent years, graphene has received continuously high attention due to its favorable thermal conductivity, extremely high specific surface area, impressive mechanical durability and great potential for applications in many fields. The preparation of graphene and hydrogen by methane cracking is of great importance for the exploitation of abundant natural gas resources. This review summarizes the research progress of graphene preparation by methane cracking, focusing on three approaches: thermocatalytic cracking, molten medium cracking, and plasma cracking. Moreover, the growth mechanism of graphene in methane cracking reaction is also highlighted. This review indicates that methane cracking is a promising technology for graphene preparation.
